Denaturalization
Denaturalization means revocation of citizenship. If you obtain U.S. citizenship through naturalization and the government later discovers you were not eligible for citizenship when it was granted, your citizenship will be revoked and you could be deported. The government may initiate a federal civil filing or criminal denaturalization proceedings.
Penalties
In addition to revocation of citizenship and possible deportation, the maximum penalty for naturalization fraud in 2010 was 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. In some cases, someone who lied on a citizenship application may be denaturalized but allowed to remain in the United States under supervision of the U.S. Probation Office.
