This problem depends on how the airplane works. I don't think small airplanes carry "oxygen canisters", a.k.a. chemical oxygen generators. Space shuttles must have them. I guess those high-speed military airplanes must have osygen canisters because oxygen in the air is not enough. Also different engines work differently.
