Pat Robertson is a televangelist, he certainly has his follower, and he is popular. However, his ultra-conservative view makes him too controversial to love. His fail bit for the nomination was due to the fall of televanglist, when Jim Bakker was sentenced to serve prison time, and Jimmy Swaggert, who started televangelism, was caught to have affair with prostitutes, and soon Robertson's support became dry. The final blow was his boasting about his service during Korean War, and got caught.
Falwell had his own issues too. But I don't want to go too much details, you can find him in wiki, about his association with Sun Myung Moon.
Anyway, Falwell and Robertson are famous for their notorious comments regarding liberals, and some time, even other conservative Christian leaders distance themselves for these two. After public support for the ousted Librian President Charles Tylor, and failing to disclose his 8 million investment in Librian gold mine, Richard Land, head of the Southern Baptist Convention, said "I would say that Pat Robertson is way out on his own, in a leaking life raft, on this one."
I don't Robertson is a bin Ladin type, but he is definately a Mohammed Omar. Robertson and Jerry Falwell are the real American Taliban.
