"Captain" on the other hand, can be applied to both small boats and large ships. Here's an old post of mine from somewhere else earlier this year:

查了一下俺案头的老字典(1966年版的Webster's New World
Dictionary),里面倒是有skipper这个条目,而且解释得非常清楚。此字从Middle English及Middle
Dutch的schipper化来,更早是由schip演变而来,也就是ship的原型。指的就是船长,尤其是小船的船长。俺的理解是captain大小船通用,但skipper特指小船船长。一般字典不收,应该是由于这个用法在Middle
English比较通行,现代英语中比较罕见之故。
