查了一下俺案头的老字典（1966年版的Webster's New World
Dictionary)，里面倒是有skipper这个条目，而且解释得非常清楚。此字从Middle English及Middle
Dutch的schipper化来，更早是由schip演变而来，也就是ship的原型。指的就是船长，尤其是小船的船长。俺的理解是captain大小船通用，但skipper特指小船船长。一般字典不收，应该是由于这个用法在Middle
English比较通行，现代英语中比较罕见之故。
