Holding the nature in awe and veneration didn't make chinese people less curious at the outside world. They noticed things - the ancient books demonstrates that - but they failed at gaining understandings of why things worked certain ways.
And the value system's dramatic change in mid-song dynasty had virtually halted the learning process.
